BE IN THE RIGHT COMPANY

BE IN THE RIGHT COMPANY

To succeed in life, and particularly this year 2025, it’s imperative for you and me to be in the right company. The time of playing games is over. You need to make progress this year and distinguish yourself as a wonderful, fruitful, and impact-making child of God.

One of the things you need to do is for you to be in the right company. This is very important. If I may ask? Who really are your friends?

You cannot be different from the company you keep. There’s a saying that goes thus: ‘Show me your friends and I can tell you the kind of a person that you are’. This is very true in every aspect of life. For instance, if you marry the wrong person, except you do something diligently about it, everything about your life will be wrong. Why? Because you are married to the wrong person.

What does the word say about the wrong company we keep? Proverbs 13:20He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. This is very clear and direct, you walk with the wise, you will become wise but when you walk with the fool, you won’t just be foolish but you will be destroyed. Why? Because foolishness destroys. 1 Corinthians 15:33Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. The same scripture in amplified version, 1 Corinthians 15:33 (AMP) Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners morals, and character. The amplified called it evil companionship, communion, associations, etc. Wisdom demands that one should run from such relationships because it will ultimately lead to total destruction.

A good example is the case of Amnon one of the sons of King David who had a bad friend that led him astray and he took a step as giving this his friend which was totally against God and men. This paved the way for his destruction. 2 Samuel 13:3-6; 11-15; 29-32

But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtle man. And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son, lean from day to day? Wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister. And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand. So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king came to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand…And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister. And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly. And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? And as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee. Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone…And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule and fled. And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left. Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth, and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent. And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom, this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

We can see how disastrous and dangerous it can be when we move with the wrong company. Jonadab was described as a subtle man – the very same description that was given to Satan in Genesis 3:1a – Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. How on earth can someone have such a man who is subtle like the Satan as a friend?

What kind of company are we supposed to have as a Christian?

  1. Prayer companions :- It is very important for you as a child of God to have and keep prayer companions. This is all about a group of people with whom you pray together. When you and your group of friends have taken time to intercede before God and God has answered your prayers together what a joy that will give you. What a beautiful company that will be. Here are examples from the Bible, the disciples as a group in the book of Acts 1:14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Acts 2:1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. Acts 3:1Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. Daniel and his friends are good examples for our young ones, these young men rule the entire Babylon by their life of prayer lifestyle. Daniel 2:17-19Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Belonging to a good prayer company makes your prayer life better. You know how to pray with proofs to show. Remember, a place of prayer is a place of agreement and therefore it’s a place of power. Leviticus 26:8 And five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.
  2. Bible Study company:- There is a group of friends that you can keep whereby all of you will study the word together for better understanding and correct and accurate application. Through this, you are exposed to more revelations that make your Christian experience more fruitful and productive. Acts 17:11-12 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore, many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. You can see that these people took time to study the word together to find depth in what they’ve been taught and find out more about the subject matter.
  3. Company with those that attend Fellowship:-  Company with those that attend church service, not just online but physical attendance. We all need that company more than ever. The right church, the right fellowship where you are fed with the undiluted word of God.  Acts 2:46-47 – And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Note the phrase ‘they continued daily…’ which means it has become a part and parcel of their lives to be in church every day for service and as they did that, God granted them favor and God continued to add to them on a daily basis.

You can be in many other companies but these three companies are fundamental and are of utmost importance.
